Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) - a step-change for sustainability-driven applications

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are highly crystalline structures characterized by nanometer-sized pores and a large surface area. This structure provides a high capacity for gas adsorption, making MOFs suitable for applications such as for carbon dioxide (CO₂) capture, water harvesting, and energy-efficient air conditioning. MOFs have the potential to be a step-change in our efforts to significantly reduce CO₂ emissions, harvest water from the air in water-stressed regions, and decrease energy consumption in air conditioning systems.

BASF is the first company to produce MOFs for carbon capture on an industrial scale. We have developed expertise on the scale-up and production of MOFs and can tailor MOFs to customers’ needs and specifications. Successful scale-up and production - Partnership with Svante Technologies Inc. 

Canadian technology provider Svante recently inaugurated a commercial filter manufacturing facility for carbon capture and removal solutions. BASF is the exclusive commercial manufacturer of the MOF sorbent material that can capture CO₂ emitted from various industrial sectors including hydrogen, pulp and paper, cement, steel, aluminum and chemicals. The partnership with Svante marked a milestone in MOF production, as BASF became the first company to successfully produce metal-organic frameworks on a commercial scale for carbon capture applications.
